What is Afrobeats?
Afrobeats is a broad label for contemporary popular music associated especially with Nigeria and Ghana. It brings together influences from local pop traditions, hip-hop, R&B and dancehall. It is not interchangeable with Afrobeat, the older style associated with Fela Kuti. Nor does it describe every kind of music made in Africa.
Music In Africa: Afrobeats and the limits of the labelA listening route
Use a genre label as a starting point, not a boundary. Follow a vocalist, producer or featured collaborator into their other releases. Compare how different songs place the voice against the rhythm, and notice where melodies repeat or change. The selections below are discovery starting points, not a ranking or a claim that these songs are playing now.
