Thanks so much for having me on the show. I'm kinda Patterson. I was born in Surrey in England, when I was 1 year old my dad moved to be a pastor of a church in Southwest London. And I lived there up till I was 18. Then I went to University to study music in Brighton in switches. On the South Coast of England. And now I'm back in London again with my family.
00:40
I've been making music. Since I was about well, I started playing piano at 5 years old. And then I probably didn't really start enjoying it till I was about 12 when I started getting into jazz music into. Oscar Peterson. And other jazz musicians. And then Yeah, probably started composing or some jazz piano pieces around that age and also worship songs, so I went to camp. And when I was about 12 and then they got off to write worship songs and. I just sort of thought, well why can't. I do that, so I started to write my own worship songs from then really and. I think that sort of got me into the habit of. Of writing and knowing what it is that makes a good song and then at about 16. I started also writing sort of funk music as well and. So I've released some funk music as well as that. But yeah, I love love, creating music love writing. Love worshipping God free music as well.
01:57
So I've released 3 worship albums now, including this new one with my new band Throne Room family. So I've worked with a friend called Dan Kim and we had a band called Patterson and Kim and we released 2 albums. In 2014 and one in 2017. Which were just the worship songs that we wrote together? And yeah, they're really special to me actually 'cause I guess the one we released in 2014, I was only. 17 years old and it was my first ever album really so, so that's sort of quite precious to my heart. Ann. Yeah, I've released a few singles as well so. 2016 released, funk single called joy, which was sort of my first big single really so that was really fun. And. Then what else yeah, so my dad Michelle mentioned more about later my dad sadly passed away. Couple years ago, Cotton expectedly of a heart attack and we wrote a song together. And in 2018, we I released the song that we wrote together. Code father's arms and that was really. Yeah, it's probably my most precious release. So far, but along with this album.
03:31
So. Throne room family is the band behind this single an this album so. We sort of person I've been working alongside mostly in this band is a lady called Kate Thornton. Who is singing in this single throne room? And. Last summer, we, we had the idea to sort of. Make an album of of hymns in honor of my dad 'cause he loved hymns. And. Yeah, so we just started recording hymns and arranging them, adding bridges to them and then we just started to write our own stuff as well. And edges of the project grew and grew felt like each song was another process in our sort of Journey of grief and. And God's goodness in that process. And so, yeah, it's been it's been such a joy to work with Kate on these songs so the album is called heart song. Ann. Yeah, it's it's been an amazing project. And in terms of. Inspiration I think Kate and I love. So I have a lot of the big, big worship artists, we love Bethel Music. House fires. Ann. Who else United Pursuit? Yeah, so that's sort of some of our inspirations. For this project.
05:05
So I think.
05:08
Ending up in the music industry I. I my heart really is to. To reach people with the love of Jesus with the good news of Jesus and what he's done, said. To save us by dying on the cross and. And I just know that music is such a powerful tool to reach loads of people. Whether it's worship music or or just sort of secular music. I believe it can all be used to share to share Jesus to share his love and so that's how I've got into it. And yeah, we'll see we'll see what happens in the future with my music and throwing family.
05:55
I think. It's quite clear that a lot of people in the music industry. Ann. Are quite quite broken to be honest San? And then you know. There. Dev really creative and amazing but I think. There's a real space for to bring. I security that's found in Jesus and. And you know, so many songs about. Drugs and sex, which a great songs in terms of musically, but lyrically. I think there's an emptiness there and I think there's a space. Thor Christian artists who go in and bring some meaning and hope into that world. Yeah, and we also nesselrodt stage in the industry where. There's more opportunity than ever with streaming and. Online marketing but at the same time, it's quite hard to make a living out of records because. People don't go to the shop to buy CDs anymore. They just stream. It online so although there's lots of opportunity. It's also hard to make money. So it's extremely competitive and the tough industry as well. There are also an exciting time where. You can get coverage that you wouldn't be able to 50 years ago.
07:21
Who is the most influential artist? Well, I'm not quite sure. What you mean in terms of in the world? Wow, that's a big question I think. Michael Jackson has to be one of them, he an. He sort of completely changed the map in terms of. Pop music and And funk and everything. Ann. And this sort of idea of having that high male vocal, although there were others who did it before him, He. I think he popularized it in an amazing way. He has to be one of them terms of at the moment. No, I mean? Ed Sheeran is pretty huge I think. His boys impressive at him is that he has. A unique sound as a singer, songwriter, but has managed to bring that into the pop industry. Which is impressive and I think that's enabled hopefully? Singer songwriters to bring their unique sound into the industry as well.
08:40
So. If you cut collaborations I've. Help to write a song with flurries to his runner up of on The X Factor little while back. And she she's releasing this song that I'm in a few others worked on with her in a little while. So that's quite exciting. Worked with a certain New York and coming artist school tomorrow be who I'm sure has a really incredible future ahead of him he? He has an incredible voice talking about Michael Jackson, he has that sort of unique. Quality to his voice. So he's definitely want to lookout for. And Yeah, like I said, I've collaborated with other worship artists in the past. Yeah, but keen to find other other friends. Who? You want to make music with me really.
09:42
I think where I differ from a lot of artists is. Uh. I guess the versatility of what I can do, possibly so. I. Being trained classically on piano and then going into jazz. And then learning to produce and also be able to sing. Anne right, it's quite a wide skill base and I guess. What I need to make sure I do is? Is home those skills so that I'm not? A Jack of all trades master of none as it were but, yeah, I think if I can really master all those. All those gifts that I feel blessed to have then. Hopefully, that will give me unique space in the industry. I also have a vocoder which. I also work with found quite exciting 'cause I think not many people seem to have a vocoder so for those who don't know vocoder is basically something where you? You play the cord and when you speak into the mic it basically sings the cord that you play. Which gives us a robotic sounds that the cord? Ann. And what you're saying it's gotta cool, yeah, 24K magic by Bruno Mars starts with this. That kind of sound. Yeah, so I think. That's possibly some of the things that make me Uniques, an artist.
11:20
I think my dream collaboration as a great question. As a band called Snarky Puppy and they they release. Albums called family dinner, they've released two family dinner albums, where they get. A singer to play. With that band and their bandages an incredible mixes have incredible jazz and funk musicians. So. To be able to sing on one of their albums would be. Would really be quite a dream?
11:53
Who else is another? Artists is part of snarky Publical Cory Henry. And have in place in Organal Keys on my would be great. In terms of from the past. Or I mean?
12:10
Well, I mean, you said around Stevie Wonder I'd love to. Who is Stevie Wonder or Herbie Hancock some of those sort of jazz and Funk Grace? Would be quite a dream?
12:28
What was the first time you bought us a great question I'm just trying to think now? What was the first album I bought it was probably a worship album?
12:40
Ann. Yeah, well it could have been. One of Could have been holding nothing back by Tim Hughes that's the album that? Has the song Happy Day on it? Now it's probably a young. Young teen one, yeah, or one of the sole survivor live albums, one of those ones. Yeah, Ben terms of non worship stuff. And just trying to think. Fast out my bought just having a look at my CD collection here.
13:15
Hum.
13:20
I guess like I said it is since I've sort of been an adult. It's not really being a thing of. If buying CDs. It's all streamed online so I can't really think of many albums support recently. Ann. So. Yeah, like I said the first set of stuff. I really listened to in terms of non worship would have been Oscar Peterson. His jazz piano stuff. So that's sort of. What inspired me to get into that that kind of area of music?
13:58
Favorite song the moment or?
14:05
Possibly there's an artist called Anna meal. Who is an amazing jazz pianist? Any kind of combines jazz with dance and funk. An as one of his songs. I'm just going to try and find it now. Ann.
14:26
I think it's Either Notre Dam S torque resonance one of those, those, songs, but anyway, it's part of his. Album he released last year and I'm just really digging the group in those songs so that's probably my favorite food, right now.
14:48
One other hobbies. I love love running. Unfortunately injured at the moment, so I should be back running again, soon, but I love sort of long distance running. And that's something I used to do with my dad a lot, so I really, really enjoy that. Then. In 2 bit of football menu fan. Yeah, love walking love the sort of countryside and mountains and stuff. And just hang out with mates really. I like eating eating food love food. Ann. And Yeah, like I said, I love Jesus. I'm a Christian, so I sort of I love just spending time. Praying and reading the Bible as well.
15:37
So so like I said, this project is single that we're hearing today is part of an album called? Heart song, which we've released online so you can find that on Spotify Heart Song by throne room, throwing one word frame and family. And yeah, please do share around with your friends and shower pages. Ann. Yeah, and we're hoping to gig this really so if you if you know anyone who would want to have us play. An some worship music, some hymns, then just get in touch with us on Facebook.
16:15
Ann. And yeah, we're just excited to see see what this will do really we encourage that. The album has has blessed people we had one really, really cute story come through of a mom who was. Listening to the album praying. And she had her eyes shot and then when she opened her eyes her little. I think it's about 7 came in and was on his knees hands hands closed praying. And so it's just amazing to hear stories about that, about the album blessing people encouraging people. But yeah, we, we wanted to sort of combine the hymns of old. And sort of redid and in a modern way, but also. Our own original songs and I think that's That's one of the really fun things about this album is bringing together. This sort of theology in depth of those hymns along with the gnu songs that. We've written. But in terms of my own music, I'm. A funk musician Corner Patterson and I'm sort of. Working on some music as well at the moment, so in next year at some point I will hopefully be releasing. Some new music as well, said, Dude Give me a follow Corner Patterson.
17:32
Yes, I've already answered it, but in terms of what's in the pipeline. Ann. With Roman family, we're not sure yet we're going to see how this project goes and possibly will. Release something in the future. But like I said, I've got. Some of my music coming up. And yeah, I'll definitely be gigging. I've got a gig actually with Kate, but it's not a small of the funky stuff. If you're in London, it's in Holborn Pizzaexpress and whole band. On the 25th of November. And I think it starts at 8:00 o'clock. But if you go on the pizza express' live website you can. Check that out.
